Nominations for Board Members 

Heartland Lakes Community School  is preparing to conduct its election of Board members on April 21, 2026 and is now soliciting nominations for candidates. The following seats are up for election:


  • Community Board Member (3 Year Term)

  • Teacher Member (2 Year Term) 

  • Caregiver Member (2 Year Term)


Instructions for using this nomination form:

Use the attached form to submit nominations. Please seek permission from each person you wish to nominate. You may nominate yourself as well. Return the completed nomination form to the office by March 31, 2026. Note: sooner is better.


Schedule for Elections

February 20, 2026: Call for nominations sent in the Newsletter and posted on the school's website.


March 31, 2026:  Deadline for nominations to be returned to the office. Nominees are encouraged to attend the March 23, 2026, meeting at 6:00 p.m.


April 11, 2026:  Nominees announced in Heartland Lakes Community School ’s newsletter and on the website.


April 20-21, 2026: Online “Ballots” are distributed and open to school community members


April 21, 2026: Voting ends at 5:00 PM.. All electronic submissions must be submitted prior to 5:00 pm. 


April 23, 2026 : Votes tallied and recorded.


April 27, 2026: Elected Board members announced at regular board meeting.


July 1: New board members’ terms begin.

General Information:


Who is eligible to serve on the Board of Directors?

Caregivers, community members and licensed teachers employed by Heartland Lakes Community School are eligible for board membership. At this time, Heartland Lakes is seeking a Community member.


What is expected of Board Members?

Each Board Member is responsible for governing the school as a collective body and for actively participating in the committee work of the Heartland Lakes Community School Board of Directors. Our board members contribute time and effort toward these tasks throughout the month - and in addition to the board and committee meetings.


Are there particular skills that we are looking for?

We hope to attract people with strong professional and communication skills as well as strong ties to the community. Experience in one or more of the following is a plus: education, fundraising, facilities, finance, human resources, community service, strategy, nonprofits and board governance. We are looking for people who believe in our school, our philosophy and mission and the educational opportunity that Heartland Lakes Community School  provides children in the Park Rapids area. We want to work with those who are willing to commit their time, energy, talent and resources to giving HLCS students the best possible educational experience.


What makes the ideal Heartland Lakes Community School Board Member?

The Heartland Lakes Community School Board seeks outstanding individuals that have a desire to improve student achievement. Good members seek to develop their skills over time through experience and on-going training. The following is a list of qualities for prospective board candidates:

  • Believe in the school’s mission and vision

  • Team Member, ability to work collaboratively with other board members

  • Respect diverse perspectives

  • Committed to the school and want to help guide it towards being successful

When are the board meetings?

The Board of Directors normally meets the last Monday of every month at Heartland Lakes Community School, calling to order 6:00 p.m. Meetings are open to everyone in accordance with Open Meeting Law. Public comments are welcomed at a designated time on the agenda.
